Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Bright Spot for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful on Saturday afternoon. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him admitted that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

At least one man kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He was on the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances for Lazio in that campaign, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
